JPOC's guide to buying wine in the Marktkauf supermarket in Germany
Marktkauf is a chain of large supermarkets that sell a very wide range of products. You will not find them on every corner and they all come with car parks so they are aimed at a large catchment area. They have a pretty wide range of wines at prices from two Euros to about twenty. The value is not as good as in the smaller supermarkets but the range is a lot wider. Perhaps it is a consequence of trying to offer a wide range but the quality is a little variable so you need to take care. Perhaps they should head hunt the chap who selects wine for the Plus chain. Below, you will see a selection of the wine that you can currently buy from this shop along with my comments and ratings. My current favourites are the 1999 Colli Senesi Chianti, the 1999 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Terre del Sole and, when it is in stock, the 1999 Chateau La Fontaine Saint-Justin. |
