Formula one: Alex Zanardi:
Europe saw it's first fully fledged CART oval race at the Lausatzring in Germany over the Monza GP weekend. Former Formula one driver Alex Zanardi was in volved in a truly horrific accident. He spun and came to a halt broadside on to the following cars one of which struck his car.
There is no easy way to descibe it. The impact removed the front third of his car including both of his legs. The CART medical team, along with local facilities performed something not far short of a miracle to stabilise Zanardi and transport him to a Berlin hospital where, after some days in an induced coma, he began his recovery.
This column wishes him well for the future and salutes his career which, in his time in the US showed that he was a driver of real class.
